Description:   The paintings of Fort Smith artist Carolynn Nally will be on display at the Main Library from July through mid-August.    Carolyn paints from the heart.  All of her work has an emotional connection featuring places she has visited and special family times.  She finds joy in painting water, as each brush stroke takes on a life of its own, twisting and turning into happy surprises.  The theme of blue doors and windows is present in her work as well, including old structures from Old Taos, Santa Fe, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean; she hopes to be able to tell their story and spark curiosity in the viewer’s eyes.  Carolyn began painting in the 1970s while living in Oklahoma.  Her work has been in juried art shows around the area.  She has studied through the years with various instructors, taking along something from each one as she continues to create.  Come take a look; artwork is available for viewing all library hours when meetings are not being held in the Community Room.

A native of Van Buren, Arkansas, Anita Paddock told the story of the murder of Ruie Ann Park, publisher of Van Buren’s Press Argus newspaper, in her book Blind Rage.  Now, in her own inimitable style, she turns her attention to the Staton murders, writing a vivid and gripping account of the murders that that will keep readers turning the pages until the very end.  Starting at 6:00 PM, mingle with the author and get your copy of Closing Time signed.  The author will discuss the book and the writing process beginning at 7:00 PM.  Refreshments will be served.

Description:          The Fort Smith Public Library invites you to join Emmy award-winning filmmaker, UA journalism professor, and Fort Smith native Larry Foley for a screening of his new film, The Favored Strawberry.  The one-hour documentary was filmed in 8 states, including Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Florida, New Jersey, North Carolina, Maryland and California.  The story unfolds at farms, big and small, where strawberries are still picked by hand, one by one, often by hard working immigrants chasing the American dream. There’s an old saying-- “Doubtless, God could have made a better berry, but doubtless God never did.” Wherever they’re grown, the best way to eat a strawberry is picked fresh from the vine.  Or as soon off the truck as you can find them!  Copies of The Favored Strawberry DVD will be available for sale at the event.

Veteran journalist, educator and documentary filmmaker Larry Foley is a professor and chair of the Lemke Department of Journalism at the University of Arkansas.  His productions have earned seven Emmys from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, and 17 Emmy nominations in writing, journalistic enterprise, history, cultural history, special program and community service. His films have also received three Best of Festival of Media Arts awards from the international Broadcast Education Association.  Larry’s late father, Don Foley, worked at a strawberry processing plant in Van Buren when he was a teenager in the 1950s, in the days when strawberries were grown in the bottoms of Crawford County.
